4 Ways to Increase Your Internet Speed

Sept 4, 2021

Do you feel like your internet connection is sluggish? You might not be getting the highest speeds that you can. In this guide, we’ll show you how to increase your internet speed with a few simple tweaks. Let’s get started!

1) Switch to Ethernet from Wireless

Switching to Ethernet from Wireless is the simplest, yet most effective method. Besides an instant increase in speeds, you will also experience increased stability, reducing packet loss and disconnections from games. One important thing to keep in mind when making the switch is that you must make sure that you choose a newer Ethernet cable rated CAT6 or higher. This ensures that the cable is able to support high enough internet speeds now and in the future. Some examples of good cables are:

  • CAT6
  • CAT6e
  • CAT6A
  • CAT7
  • CAT7A
  • CAT8

2) Switch to 5 GHz from 2.4 GHz

If switching to Ethernet is not possible, and you are located relatively close to your WiFi router, then you should switch from a 2.4 GHz wireless frequency to a 5 GHz wireless frequency. At shorter ranges, 5 GHz wireless frequency will get you much higher internet speeds (double or triple!).

3) Replace your wireless router with a newer model

A wireless router is the device that connects you to the internet. If your router feels slow or is a fairly older gen model, try replacing it with a newer model for increased speeds. If your internet plan is for speeds much higher than what you are currently getting, your old router could be the bottleneck! A newer model router can handle speeds over 1 Gbps. That's over 50x the max speed some older models can handle. That’s the type of speed increase you should expect if you upgrade your wireless router!

4) Buy a WiFi extender

A WiFi extender is a device that increases the range of your wireless network. This allows you to place your WiFi broadcast further, increasing your signal strength and connection speeds. If the source of your speed problems is due to poor signal strength, then this could be the fix you are looking for! When choosing a WiFi extender for your home, make sure it is compatible with your router. You should also check out the reviews of the model to make sure it leaves good feedback from other buyers.
